Rioja La Quinta Cruz

Rioja
2021

100% Mazuelo (Carignan) from the La Quinta Cruz vineyard, planted in 1986 on a southeastern slope near the Ebro River. The vineyard's diverse soils range from sandy/clay to stony. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel, then aged for one year in a combination of large oak barrels and concrete. 3,085 bottles produced.

2021 was a notable year for Rioja Alta. It began with heavy snowstorms and rain until February, followed by a challenging spring marked by three hailstorms in one week and a significant frost. Summer was particularly dry, but fortunately, rain arrived in September, so the harvest had sunny days with dry, chilly nights. The resulting grapes were small and intense, with balanced acidity.

"Is Mazuelo, otherwise known as Carignan, capable of finesse? In the right hands it is. This remarkable example comes from a 1.4-hectare parcel that was planted in 1986 and is remarkably bright and ethereal. Pomegranate, wild strawberry and pink grapefruit flavours are embellished by silky tannins, subtle reduction and vivid acidity. The essence of the new, terroir-focused Rioja. 2025-32"
