Morgon Javernières

France
Beaujolais
2022

100% Gamay. From 3 hectares of vines in the historic Morgon lieu-dit of Javernières at the foot of the famous hill of the Côte du Py. The soils are much heavier with deep, iron-rich, red clay here versus the more schistous "rotten rock" up the Py hill. The vines are certified-organic, are 40 years old and have a full eastern exposure. They are harvested by hand. Generally around half of the bunches are left whole with half destemmed and put together into closed concrete vats for a partly carbonic fermentation; maceration is 13-14 days with a submerged cap and no punchdowns. A very small amount of sulfur is added after malo and sometimes at bottling. The wine is aged in cement tank for 9 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.

"The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is blessed with wonderful transparency and complexity on the nose: vivid red berry fruit, wilted rose petal and crushed stones. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's fresh and focused, gently building to a tensile, lightly spiced and quite persistent finish. Real class."

"Coudert To the best of my knowledge, the 2022 Moulin-à-Vent from Alain Coudert (of Clos de la Roilette fame) is brand new in the family’s lineup. Given that the family’s Clos de la Roilette lies down in the valley right next to border for Moulin-à-Vent (and was once sold as such), it is a logical extension for Alain. The wine is outstanding on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up scents of cassis, black cherries, a bit of spit-roasted gamebird, dark soil tones, coffee bean and a topnote of bonfire. On the palate the wine is deep, young and full-bodied, with a beautiful, rock solid core of sappy fruit, fine soil inflection and grip, ripe, buried tannins and superb length and grip on the impeccably balanced and complex finish. This is outstanding Moulin-àVent, but it will demand a bit of cellaring to drink with true generosity. 2030-2080. "

"The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is captivatingly fragrant with aromas of cherries, pomegranate, dried petals, Earl Grey tea, slate and Indian spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied and packed with a silken core of fruits interlaced with salinity. It has a lining of ripe acidity and a persistent tension from the chalk-like tannins that impart a subtle resistance; together, this draws the wine out with great sophistication, culminating in a long, crafted finish. This is a wine that, despite all of the material it is working with, boasts admirable poise and elegance."
