Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses

France
Burgundy
2020

In Remington Norman and Charles Taylor’s book, The Great Domaines of Burgundy, Les Vergelesses and Île des Vergelesses are described as top sites in the village of Pernand-Vergelesses, “wines of weight and structure, capable of aging for twenty years or more.” Les Vergelesses is just below Île, lower on the slope with more clay and iron. This parcel faces east, like the best vineyards of Corton, and the 1.22 hectare parcel was planted in 1954. Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in barrel for 18 months, 10% new oak.

"An earthier and not quite as spicy array is comprised by notes of red and dark berries with a similar plethora of pretty floral nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is again super-sleek thanks to the moderately fine-grained tannins supporting the firm, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. At least some patience advised."

"Opening in the glass with aromas of cherries, berries, loamy soil and peonies, the 2020 Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses is medium to full-bodied, with a velvety attack and a deep core of fruit, framed by lively acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish."
