IGT Toscana Rosso "Uva Matta"
Field blend. Red: Sangiovese/Ciliegiolo/Colorino/Mammolo/Canaiolo/others. White: Malvasia/Malvasia Toscana/Trebbiano/Procanico/Nocchianello/more. The list of varieties--not even a complete one--tells the tale of this new wine's name, Uva Matta or "crazy grapes". This tiny parcel of 100-year-old vines is planted on sandy galestro soils at 500 meters in the hills around extinct volcano Monte Amiata, about 10 miles southeast of Montalcino. Fonterenza farms it biodynamically, as they do their home estate in San Polo in Montalcino. The bunches are co-harvested, destemmed and fermented spontaneously in an open vat with a 10-day maceration. The wine is aged for a year in a used acacia barrique and bottled without filtration. 2022 yielded a mere 300 bottles.
