Champagne Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru

France
Champagne
NV

100% Pinot Noir from Verzy and Verzenay. 45% 2017, 35% 2016, 20% 2015. Made 40% in neutral barrels. No dosage (although it’s labeled Extra Brut.) Described by Liem in his book, Champagne, as having, “vivacious structure and dark, mineral-driven fruit, this wine is focused on finesse as much as power and it’s keenly expressive of the northern Montagne.”

"A vivid Champagne, with ripe green apple and blackberry fruit framed by firm acidity and carried on the lacy -- almost crunchy -- mousse. Gains complexity from accents of almond skin and anise, which linger on the chalky finish. Disgorged January 2022."

"The new release of Hugues Godmé’s Blanc de Noirs non-vintage Extra Brut is from the base year of 2017 and was disgorged in January of 2022, after four years aging sur lattes. The wine is composed entirely from pinot noir and is non-dosé. The wine delivers a lovely bouquet of white peach, apple, bread dough, raw almond, limestone minerality and a topnote of caraway seed. On the palate the wine is brisk, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a fine core of fruit, excellent mineral drive, elegant mousse and a long, precise and beautifully balanced finish. Given the steely nature of Verzenay’s minerality, the four years aging on its fine lees have just allowed the wine’s girdle of acidity to start to relax and the wine will drink even better with a few more years in the cellar."
