Morgon "La Voûte Saint-Vincent"

France
Beaujolais
2022

100% Gamay. The beginning of the Desvignes range is "La Voûte Saint Vincent", named for the vault or "voûte" of the old family house and for the patron saint of winemakers. It is a blend of certified-organic estate parcels totalling 4.5 hectares in the climat of Douby, which lies in the northeast corner of Morgon along the border of Fleurie. The La Voûte vines average 45 years old and are planted in sandy, decomposed-granite soils. Harvest is manual. The bunches are generally left about 50% whole-cluster and 50%-destemmed and gently pressed into closed concrete vats for a partly carbonic fermentation; maceration is 10-12 days with a submerged cap and no punchdowns. A very small amount of sulfur is added after malo and sometimes at bottling. The wine is aged in concrete vat fro 7 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.

"Coudert To the best of my knowledge, the 2022 Moulin-à-Vent from Alain Coudert (of Clos de la Roilette fame) is brand new in the family’s lineup. Given that the family’s Clos de la Roilette lies down in the valley right next to border for Moulin-à-Vent (and was once sold as such), it is a logical extension for Alain. The wine is outstanding on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up scents of cassis, black cherries, a bit of spit-roasted gamebird, dark soil tones, coffee bean and a topnote of bonfire. On the palate the wine is deep, young and full-bodied, with a beautiful, rock solid core of sappy fruit, fine soil inflection and grip, ripe, buried tannins and superb length and grip on the impeccably balanced and complex finish. This is outstanding Moulin-àVent, but it will demand a bit of cellaring to drink with true generosity. 2030-2080. "
