Clos de la Perrière Monopole 1er Cru

The Clos de la Perrière is a single five hectare parcel, a true clos, surrounded by a wall in Fixin. Bénigne Joliet considers that there are four separate terroirs here and each is vinified and aged separately and blended just before bottling. The soil varies with stoney limestone, clay, a mix of clay and limestone and then the area near the woods at the top of the slope is cooler than the rest of the vineyard. The youngest vines are ten years old and are not blended into this cuvèe, so the vines are 40-90 years old. In 2021, the wine was made with 25% whole cluster during vinification and aged in oak, approximately 20% new.

"This wine continues to be a touchstone for the northern Côte de Nuits. The wine is still aging, so we tasted each component separately. The northern part of the vineyard is a bit less forward; it is more tannic, and the acidity is sharper. The southern part is more generous and fleshy. An approximate blend shows deep colour, lush, plummy fruit, plenty of spice and menthol, and a firm, dense structure that retains a velvety approachability and lingers on the palate. Delightful."
