Ancient green slate from the Penninic period, sometimes more, sometimes less covered with humic loam. South- and southeast-facing steep vineyard slopes. Protected by forest on the upper hill (to the north). Spontaneous fermentation in vats, pressing after 20 days, malolactic fermentation and 35 months ageing in large wooden barrels.

"The captivating nose of this great blaufrankisch has kaleidoscopic spice aromas, plus a wealth of forest-berry and wild-herb notes. Stunning concentration, extremely vibrant fruit and the spicy complexity make this a show-stopper. Super-long and precise finish that is intensely mineral. Delicious now, but what a great future this has!"

"Christoph Wachter's 2019 Blaufränkisch Ried Saybritz shows a fairly open and less focused, very rich and intense nose of dark fruit (blackberries) and crystalline rock, plus peppery notes. On the palate, this is a powerful, intense and persistent but again quite open and slightly leathery red wine with the fine polish of green slate. It has silky, elegant richness, fine tannins and leather and barnyard flavors on the powerful, fruit-intensive and still bitter finish. This is a quite open but possibly great and persistent red wine that has currently lost some aromatic focus, but it has all the assets for long bottle aging."
