Maybe 30 years old and killing it in her native Romagna, with organic old-vine Sangiovese near a forest not far from the Adriatic sea. Not a lot of other winemakers around, but there are other small farmers, and then there's the forest... It's an ecosystem she's chosen to make wine in with a myriad of plants and animals sharing this little hillside. She says "there's a lot of diverse pollination. There are foxes, there are crows, there are frogs and squirrels and wolves..." Natural wines from Austria are few and far between, and what bottles make it to the states are even fewer. Suffice it to say I was pumped to discover Jutta Ambrositch. Jutta and her husband Marco are working with organic vineyards of indigenous varietals, using no yeast and little to no sulphur at bottling. Many of their wines are co-fermented Gemischter Satz - indigenous grape field blends from their holdings all around Vienna. Juttas wines are like elegant punk rock for my mouth; refined yet sassy, playful yet serious. They are some of the few rebellious Viennese winemakers looking to create something new. ID: 18100751554124084 Monte di Grazia is tucked away in the Lattari Mountains of Campania, inland from the Amalfi Coast, on a treacherous, winding, narrow road. Extreme isolation, combined with altitude and volcanic soil, allows the town of Tramonti, home of Monte di Grazia, to keep a pristine pocket of pre-phylloxera vines. Ungrafted and trained in giant pergolas known locally as tendone, they are among the oldest vines in Italy: most are over 100 years old, with some approaching 300 years old. Planted with the local red varieties of Tintore di Tramonti, Piedirosso, Moscio, Sciascinoso, Olivella, and white varieties Pepella, Biancatenera, and Ginestra, the wines fall outside the Costa d'Amalfi DOC for lack of plantings of Falanghina and enough Piedirosso. Alfsono Arpino established the estate in 2004 with love & respect for these old vines. Today with his children, the Arpino family farms 3.2 hectares of certified organic vineyards, as well as a lemon orchard & a chestnut grove. To taste Monte di Grazias wines is to connect with a delicious, deep biology and history of a place.4 years 2 months ago
