Vino Rosso "Gloria"

Italy
Alto Adige
2015

100% Lagrein. From Nusserhof's oldest vines, up to 90 years old. The tiny-production "Gloria" has been made only 4 times so far: 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015. As for all of the Mayr family's vines, the farming is certified organic and harvest is by hand. Typically, all of their red wines are made with destemmed grapes; the great experimental aspect of this old-vine bottling is leaving all of the clusters whole for vinification. The bunches are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. Maceration lasts 4-6 weeks. The wine is aged in French oak botte for 2.5 years, followed by 2 more two years in bottle. The wine was deemed "not typical" by the DOC powers-that-be originally, so the wine is classified as a Vino Rosso (hence no variety or vintage on the label, except the latter in the form of a lot number). The wine is not named for Gloria Mayr--who grows and makes the wines with her dad Heinrich--but rather in homage to the "glory" of the old Lagrein vines.
