VDF Rouge "Chemin Faisant"
80% Cinsault/20% Syrah. La Providence is in Lambesc in the northwest corner of Provence. Its first vintage was 2020; 2023 is only the second vintage of Chemin Faisant (roughly translates, aptly, as "work in progress" or "finding the way"). This young domaine is focused entirely on local varieties, planted on sandy, stony limestone soils with little clay. The Cinsault vines are 40 years and the Syrah 30 years old. The farming is certified-organic--hard won after a years-long conversion from the heavily conventional farming of the previous owners--and includes gentle working of the soils and the use of cover crops. The bunches are harvested by hand into small bins and the two varieties vinified separately. The Cinsault is destemmed and spontaneously fermented and aged for 6 months in concrete eggs; the whole-cluster Syrah goes through a 15-day carbonic maceration and is aged for 6 months in 500-liter demi-muids. The wine is blended and bottled unfiltered with a small dose (its first) of sulfur. Though La Providence lies within the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence AOC, they have opted for Vin de France classification. 183-case production.
