Sancerre Chavignol "Clos de Beaujeu"
The Clos de Beaujeu vineyard in Chavignol is one of the most famous sites in all of Sancerre. It has very steep slopes, steeper and Mont Damnes and south, south-east exposure. It's a special site for Pierre as he replanted it when he joined his dad, Yves, in 2005. He put in terraces (the only terraced vineyards in the site) and planted with a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Each vine has it's own stake (echalas training system), which is common in Cote-Rotie, Priorat, and the Mosel, areas known for their steep slopes. It's very unique in the region and also very labor intensive. The soil is Kimmeridgian limestone and you find big limestone rocks in the top soil. Like all of Pierre's wines, he works with natural fermentations on indigenous yeasts. The Beaujeu is fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel tanks and up to fifty percent barrels, aged on the fine lees for a year and then aged another six months in tanks after being blended. On the palate, the Beaujeu is as equally complex as the Mont Damnes with more body and more power. Both single vineyards from Yves Martin are quite special and are excellent representations from these top sites.
