Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes

France
Beaujolais
2020

Moulin à Vent is known for its power, structure and longevity, the antithesis of what most people think of when they think of Beaujolais. We are lucky that the Barbet’s like to hold onto this wine and release it when it’s just beginning to open up. It’s made in open top, oak tronconical (tronconique) vats and it’s aged in barrels and large foudres for a year. Beautiful aromatics with notes of violets, juicy cherry and supple tannins with structure.

"The 2020 Moulin-à-Vent from Xavier and Nicolas Barbet is a beautiful bottle of wine that is starting to blossom nicely on the nose, wafting from the glass in a complex and pure blend of black cherries, cassis, espresso, cigar smoke, dark soil tones, a nice touch of sweet stem tones and a topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and complex, with lovely mid-palate depth, excellent mineral undertow and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, beautifully balanced and very promising finish. The palate here is still in need of a couple more years of cellaring to properly soften up its backend tannins, but the wine is going to be outstanding once it is ready to drink. First rate Moulin-à-Vent."
