Cheverny Rouge

France
Loire
2022

Pinot/Gamay/Côt. From estate vines averaging thirty years old on clay-limestone soils, sustainably farmed and harvested by hand. The varieties are vinified separately, each being fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur. The Pinot Noir and Côt are destemmed and fermented separately; they are aged separately in used oak. The Gamay undergoes a whole-cluster, semi-carbonic maceration and is aged in tank. The three wines are blended and bottled in the spring after the vintage, with a small amount of sulfur.

"It has been a year since I last drank a bottle of the lovely 2022 Cheverny Rouge from François Cazin and the wine has blossomed beautifully over the course of that time. This cuvée is made from a blend of gamay, pinot noir and côt and has really turned out splendidly in this outstanding vintage for red wines across the Loire. The bouquet hops from the glass in a mix of black cherries, sweet dark berries, just a hint of cranberry from the gamay in the blend, tree bark, woodsmoke, chalky soil tones, anise and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is bright, fullbodied, focused and complex, with a lovely sense of sappiness at the core, fine soil undertow and grip, buried, moderate tannins and superb length and grip on the very well balanced finish. This is as fine an example of Cheverny Rouge as I have ever had the pleasure to taste! 2024-2045. "
