"The vineyard of Marcarini sits on the same hillside as the Cru of Casot, but Marcarini is on the far side of the hill and faces northeast in its exposition, which was probably a disadvantage back in the old days, but may well now be an advantage in our age of global warming. Thirty percent of Enrico Nada’s nebbiolo vines in the beautiful Cru of Marcarini were planted in the late 1970s. Enrico ages his Marcarini and Casot bottlings the same, with the first year of élevage in tonneaux and the second in botti. The 2020 Marcarini is a beautifully refined wine aromatically, wafting from the glass in a very precise blend of cherries, licorice, gamebird, rose petals, lovely soil tones, woodsmoke and a distinct topnote of red curry. On the palate the wine is bright, fullbodied and beautifully soil-driven in personality, with a lovely core of red fruit, tangy acids, ripe, well-integrated tannins and outstanding length and grip on the poised, complex and well-balanced finish. This is outstanding Barbaresco."
