Vermouth
Brand-new in the US, Turi Vermouth is a red vermouth--of a pale, tawny color--with a white wine base, made from the certified-organic Catarratto grapes from Turi Marino's vineyard. The juice macerates with the skins for five days and ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. An infusion is made from absinthe, mugwort, gentian, quinine, rhubarb, vanilla, wild thyme, wild fennel, orange peel and more. The wine and the infusion are blended, sweetened with sugar and fortified to 17% alcohol. Turi grew up in a family where vermouth was enjoyed as a digestivo after dinner by his elders, hence his inspiration to create his own and to make it in a lighter, easier sipping style. Luckily, one of his mentors in enological school in Piemonte was a technical director at Carpano who oversaw the production of Punt e Mes (the first vermouth, no less) and who encouraged him to pursue his interest. If you're interested, Turi prefers his very cold, but not iced to avoid dilution, with an orange twist (but isn't mad at it in a spritz or a Negroni and the like!).
