Montrachet

2019

Perhaps no white wine is more esteemed than Montrachet and the entire vineyard totals a mere 7.99 hectares. Domaine Baron Thenard is the second largest vineyard-owner with 1.83 hectares and it's been in Bordeaux-Montrieux's family going back to 1873. It's composed of two different parcels on the Chassagne side, allowing it to be labeled "Le Montrachet". The soil is highly active limestone mixed with Bathonian limestone pebbles, and veins of flint, clay, lime, and iron oxide. The elevation is 250 to 270 meters altitude with a 10% slope with south, south-east exposure. It's aged in barrels, 50% new for a minimum of 18 months. It's difficult to put into words how special this wine is, the quality often inspires silence from anyone who tastes because it demands your attention. And from Jasper Morris's, Inside Burgundy, he quotes Dr. Lavalle who said, "The wine of Montrachet should be considered as one of those rare marvels of which only a small number of the chosen are permitted to appreciate the perfection...and that he who is able to purchase some bottles of the best vintages should be satisfied that, whatever the price, he will never have paid too much."
