Buchegger

Weingut Buchegger was established in 1893 and Walter Buchegger is the sixth generation to run the family estate. He took over from his father in 1994. He has 11 hectare of vines located in the Kremstal on mostly loess soil that he farms following the Austrian “Integrated Process” or IP. IP is a bit stricter than “Organic” in that it has more stringent limits on the amount of copper sulfite used in the vineyards and machines are not allowed in the vineyards so that the soil is not compacted which leads to healthier root systems and vines. Walter mainly grows Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with a smattering of Zweigelt, Chardonnay and Merlot. The top sites in his holdings are the Gebling, Holzgasse, Pfarrweingarten, Moosburgerin, and Tiefenthal. The Bucheggers are proud that their vines have been around before scientists were working on clonal breeding and that their vines are all massale selection from the time the winery was established. It is very important to Walter that his wines are elegant, balanced and give a pure and easy to drink sensation.

Buchegger

Gruner Veltliner Gebling 2011

Gebling is technically an Erste Lage vineyard, but Buchegger cannot claim it on the label because he does not charge enough for the wine, making it a great value.

Reviews
Ripe and rich, with a complex mix of white fruit, ginger and lemon curd flavors that feature plenty of lusciousness. Very creamy midpalate, with a sculpted finish of mint and allspice that lingers with hints of white chocolate. Drink now. 150 cases imported.
