Karthäuserhof

FLASH UPDATE!  The Tyrell family, owners of Weingut Karthäuserhof for many years, recently sold the estate to a family member in New York. The same winemaker has been retained, and quality at this remarkable estate continues apace.

Weingut Karthauserhof resides in the top echelon of Mosel wine producers. This estate has been in existence for centuries, and was previously owned by Carthusian monks, following its presentation to them by Prince Balduin of Luxembourg in the 14th century. After taking control of this historic estate in the 1980s, the Tyrells brought together the Kronenberg, Orthsberg, Sang and Stirn vineyards into one site, now referred to simply as Karthäuserhofberg. The Karthäuserhofberg vineyard is situated in Eitelsbach, a small village on the Ruwer, near the town of Trier. The vineyard, comprising 19ha of predominantly Devonian slate, is one of the most highly regarded in Germany. The vast majority is planted with Riesling, with a small amount of Weissburgunder.

Kabinett Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg 2009

Reviews
"A juicy Riesling, displaying tangerine and citrus zest flavors that are bright and crisp. Light on its feet, with a long aftertaste of mineral and spice. Very refreshing. Drink now through 2022."
Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator, 2012
