Monsant’s DO status was acheived in 2001. Just a stone’s throw from Priorat, it shares much of the same beneficial growing conditions as its famed neighbor. The climate is Mediterrenean with hot summer days and cool nights. There are many old vineyards of Garnacha and Carinena and the soils are mostly chalk and loam over a granite base. So while many producers from Priorat have sought land here for its low prices, Montsant has much to offer in its own right.
