Producers from Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the farthest east of the seven main islands and is home to the most dramatic terroir of the island chain. At times it's like looking at Mars with its red and black soils that are comprised of volcanic ash (known locally as Picon) and lack of vegetation. Other times, the vineyards look like they are planted on a lunar landscape. They are the closest to the African continent and experience the winds from the Sahara's (Ciracco) more intensely than the rest of the islands. There are times when even the Saharan sand can be seen in the air if the winds are strong enough. Due to this and the lack or organic matter in the top soil, each vine is planted in one hole (or hoyo) that can be anywhere betewen 3-8 meters wide and equally as deep. This IS heroic viticulture!
